The Office of the Privacy Commissioner Launches “Know Your Rights” Campaign Empowering Individuals to Protect Their Privacy

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(8 December 2024, Hamilton) – The Office of the Privacy Commissioner (“PrivCom”) is proud to announce the launch of the “Know Your Rights” Campaign; a national effort to educate individuals about their privacy rights and provide practical tips on safeguarding personal information ahead of the 1 January 2025 implementation date of the Personal Information Protection Act 2016 (“PIPA”).

As part of the “Know Your Rights” Campaign, PrivCom staff will be engaging directly with the public at various community locations. PrivCom invites you to join us at The MarketPlace grocery stores in the city of Hamilton, Victoria Street, Heron Bay, Somerset and Shelly Bay on Tuesday, December 10, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, where our team will be distributing informational fliers and noting any suggestions for engaging with the public.

In addition to this in-person initiative, the “Know Your Rights” Campaign will include the public circulation of a flier that will be delivered by mail to households across the island later in December. The flier shall include vital information regarding;

  • Understanding the rights of individuals under PIPA;

  • Insight into organisations’ obligations and responsibility for use of personal information under PIPA; and

  • How to report situations where you suspect your privacy rights have not been upheld.

“Privacy is a fundamental right, and in the era of digital technology, it is critical for individuals to know how to protect their personal information,” said Angie Farquharson, Acting Privacy Commissioner. “This campaign is designed to make privacy rights information accessible in order to empower individuals to be in control of their own personal information.” PrivCom encourages all members of the community to take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about their rights and how to exercise them.
